• Q.) What is live-in care and how does it work?

Live-in care is when a carer lives the home of you or your loved ones to enable your or their required needs to be met. A live-in carer will provide support and companionship for your loved ones when family members are not in a position to support. The carer will be chosen on the basis of shared hobbies, interests and other factors such as the ability to meet your loved one’s medical and healthcare needs.

The live-in care workers will be available to help you or your relative throughout the day and at night. Some care workers work a rota pattern and others live in all the time depending on the care package you choose.

Live-in care has become an increasingly popular alternative for a lot of elderly people instead of moving into a care home. It offers a way of continuing to live as independently as possible at home and in their local community.

Live-in care also enables people to remain in their own familiar surroundings where they have their home comfort and are able to feel safe and in control of all aspects of their daily care.

  • Q.) Why should I consider live-in care?

Having a live-in carer eases the pressure on family and friends so that they can get back to enjoying and spending quality time with their loved ones.Receiving care at home can help the care recipient continue to live independently, with the safeguard of having their care needs met by a professional carer. Care at home will enable you or your loved one to continue to exercise choice in many aspects of your or their lives which would not be possible if they had to go into a residential or nursing home. Having a live-in carer will enable you or your loved one to receive one-to-one bespoke personal care according to your needs in the comfort of home.

You get to receive 24-hour care at home while having the security of being in your own home with all your personal belongings or pets. Individual carers can stay with you for up to four weeks depending on the agreed shift pattern. Receiving care at home will give relatives peace of mind and flexibility to visit without restrictions.

All of our staff will be safely recruited in line with our robust recruitment policy by undergoing enhanced DBS checks as well as competence and value-based screening.

  • Q.) What if I don’t get on with my carer?

We will aim to match you with the carer according to your personality and with the right skills to provide you safe effective care. If you are not happy with your carer, we will work towards finding you another carer that matches your bespoke care needs.

  • Q.) Who provides for the carer’s upkeep?

You will need to provide a bedroom for the carer as well as a weekly food budget of £30. The carer will supply their own toiletries.

  • Q.) Do you offer hourly care?

Yes, we offer home care visits for a minimum of 3 hours to ensure high quality personal care and support. However, most people choose to pay a little extra to have full time live-in care.

  • Q.) Will I have the opportunity to meet the carer before they commence work?

We are unable to guarantee face-to-face meetings prior to the carer arriving to your home due to the cost involved in facilitating the pre-visit. Some carers may be travelling a considerable distance from their homes. However, we will send you or your family member a full profile of the carer in advance including a full CV. You will have a trial week with your carer to make sure he or she is the right person to meet your needs. If you are not happy with the carer, we will work hard to find you another carer or you can decide to opt out with no obligations.

  • Q.) Is the carer able to assist with outings and or appointments?

Absolutely, the carer will be able to escort you or your loved one to appointments, the park or if you require to go shopping if you are able to do so safely. Some people supply a car that the live-in carer can use, alternatively if a carer has a car that they are happy to use, this can be arranged for a small fee.

  • Q.) Will I be able to get local authority funding?

In order to claim from your local council you will need to start by arranging a care needs assessment with them. Depending on your personal circumstances, you may be able to get some or all of your care funded by your local authority. The funding is means tested, which means that your loved one’s liquid (that’s not including their property) assets will be assessed. The threshold In England is £23,250, if you have assets or savings in excess of this amount, then you will have to pay fully for your care. But if you have assets less than this amount, you may be eligible for financial support to pay for your care. For more information contact your local council.

  • Q.) How do I pay you?

You or your family pays for the provided care weekly. Terms and methods of payment can be discussed with individual customers according to their preferences.

  • Q.) What happens when the carer has time off?

We understand the importance of continuity for people who use our services. When carers need to take a break periodically, arrangements will be made to provide continuity of care.

  • Q.) What facilities will the carer need?

The carer will need their own bedroom to use for sleeping and as a place to relax when they are taking a break. The carer will prepare meals and probably eat with your loved one, so separate dining facilities will not be needed. A budget of £30 per week for the carer’s food is normally expected, however, if you prefer we can add the amount to your weekly payments. If your loved one likes to get out and about and they are well enough to do so, it can be a good idea to supply a car that the live-in carer can use. Having a car to use can also help with shopping trips and transport to appointments or day care sessions, especially if your loved one lives in an isolated area. Please bear in mind, for carers who are willing to use their own cars we do ask for an additional fee to cover running expenses. This is passed directly on to the carer.

  • Q.) Will I need any special equipment?

If your family member has mobility issues, it is worth looking into the various aids that can help them to mobilise safely. Mobility aids can range from Zimmer frames to the installation of a stair lift. If your loved one is unable to stand, you will need a hoist so that the live-in carer can be able to reposition your loved one. Equipment such as a mobile commode and shower chairs can be useful for toilet and personal hygiene tasks such as showering. If you or your loved one have a district nursing service, they will be able to advise on the best specialist equipment for nursing your loved one and providing care at home. They should also be able to organise the supply of these items, although some items may have to be purchased privately.
